Bite to upgrade mobile networks in Latvia and Lithuania

Lithuanian telecoms operator Bite has announced plans to upgrade its domestic and Latvian mobile networks.

Chinese telecoms equipment supplier Huawei will provide its SingleRAN@Broad solution and 4G-ready technologies to modernise Bite’s entire mobile infrastructure in Latvia. The vendor will deploy a nationwide 2G/3G/4G mobile network, including core network and radio access network equipment, as well as its SingleRAN@Broad solution.

‘We are pleased to work with Bite,’ said James Chen, managing director of Huawei Nordic & Baltic, adding: ‘With industry leading technologies as well as our abundant experience in network modernisation, we are confident to provide Bite with a high quality network, furthermore to improve user experience for Bite customers with future mobile broadband services, anywhere and anytime.’

The first phase of the project is slated for completion by the end of 2010. Meanwhile, TelecomPaper reports that Bite will increase the number of its Ericsson-supplied 3G base stations in Lithuania by 45%, in a bid to boost mobile broadband coverage by 40% by the end of the year.
